Stomach pain is one of the most common types of pain that people report in the United States in 2022. It affects many seniors every day, and can get so bad that it often leaves older Americans bedridden until the pain subsides and they can once again move freely.

Stomach pain has a wide variety of causes, but some are more concerning than others. All it takes to stay up to date is a quick search online. If you’re concerned, see your doctor about any symptoms you’re experiencing.

Stomach pain can be triggered by a number of potential causes including:

  • Constipation
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Food allergies or intolerance (such as lactose intolerance)
  • Food poisoning
  • Stomach flu

Mild causes of stomach pain include:

  • Bowel blockage or obstruction
  • Heartburn, indigestion
  • Muscle strain

Major conditions that can cause back pain include:

  • Lung cancer: Digestive problems. Between 10-20% of people with lung cancer get high levels of calcium in their blood. Too much calcium in the blood may cause digestive problems, like tummy aches, constipation, or nausea.
  • Breast Cancer: Metastatic breast cancer is more likely to cause pain than early-stage breast cancer. For example, if the breast cancer spreads to the bones, it may cause back, hip, or shoulder pain. If the breast cancer spreads to the liver, it can cause abdominal pain.
  • Crohn’s disease: Pain and cramping are some of the most common symptoms associated with Crohn’s disease. The pain is most commonly associated with Crohn’s affecting the small intestine, though cramping of all kinds can occur no matter what part of your GI is inflamed.
